The fascinating and somewhat mystical Moomin Ancestor becomes familiar to the reader in Tove Jansson's story Magical Winter (1957). In the story, Moomin has woken up in the middle of hibernation and is watching over Tuutik in the bathroom. Tuttikki has forbidden Moomin from opening the door of the bathroom cupboard, but because Moomin is angry and frustrated with the winter darkness, he opens the door, through which Grandfather can escape. Later, the Ancestor is found in the Moomin House parlor, in the chandelier. The ancestor settles in the Moomin House and falls in love with the strip on the tile stove's lid. It becomes the most important treasure of the Ancestor.

The Moomin Classics series presents each Moomin Valley character, emphasizing their typical character traits. The illustrations show the characters from the front and back, and tell the story of the character in question.
