Melatonin (a night hormone) is a hormone involved in the regulation of sleep-wake rhythm, which is mainly secreted by the pineal gland of the brain. Melatonin excretion is low during the day, increases in the evening, peaks at 02-04 and decreases towards the morning. In adulthood, the rhythm of melatonin production is maintained, but its nocturnal concentration decreases, and there is no longer a difference in nocturnal and daytime melatonin levels in the elderly. However, individual differences in melatonin secretion are large at all ages.
The dietary supplement is not a substitute for a varied and balanced diet or a healthy lifestyle.
