Take a trip through the decades, from the junior years in Lahti to become the captain and international superstar of the Finnish national team.
Jari Litmanen is the best football player in Finland ever. The book reviews the rise of talent in Lahti to become the captain and international superstar of the Finnish A national team in the 1990s.
Litmanen’s tremendous years of play coincided with the greatness of Amsterdam’s Ajax. The Dutch club won the Champions League in 1995 and was in the final the following year. The Finnish top ten player was a pillar of Ajax's success.
The book focuses on Litmanen's achievements, but also talks about difficult periods in his career. Litmanen had little time left in Barcelona and Liverpool. In the Finnish A national team, Litmanen played 137 matches under nine head coaches in 1989-2010. The book also explains why Finland did not qualify for the World Cup or European Championships at that time.
About the authors of the book Juha Kanerva is an experienced sports writer who has been compiling the Finnish Football Association's 100th anniversary book Dear Football and the A-national team's history work Kivinen competition trip. He has also written a biography of Teemu Puk. The birth of Kanerva and Vesa Tikander's Sports was awarded Sportsbook of the Year 2012. Another author, Petri Lahti, is an award-winning sports journalist and head of Ilta-Sanomat's sports editorial office. He followed the national team at close range throughout Litmanen's career. Lahti has written the biography of speed skater Mika Poutala for a few hundredths.
